Rubber washers, grommets, gaskets & seals

Rubber washers

A washer is a round, flat piece of hardware with a hole in the centre that is often placed between a screw or nut and a surface in order to increase tension.

Rubber washers are used in applications that require a tight seal and those that are exposed to water, humidity or other liquids as they don’t rust.

Washers are often made of metal, which can rust when exposed to moisture. Rubber washers are both durable and resistant to fluids. This makes them ideal for use in plumbing and in systems that might experience condensation, such as in a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. They are also common on boats, swimming pools, pressure washers and other water-related equipment.

Another benefit of rubber washers is that they are more flexible than metal washers. This allows the fasteners to be secured more tightly and also allows for the slight expansion and contraction necessary in some applications. Foam washers may be used to help meet these needs, but they can deteriorate over time. A rubber washer, being stronger and less prone to damage, will last longer, particularly if the fasteners around the washer are frequently tightened and loosened.

A rubber washer has the potential to create a seal which can be used to prevent fluid or air from leaking. This is due both to rubber’s flexible nature and its water-resistant quality.

Non ideal applications for rubber washer would be not to use with corrosive liquids, and they may interact negatively with some other types of liquids. They also should not be placed in extreme heat as melting can occur. Additionally, rubber washers exposed to differences in temperature with the combination of changes in humidity, must be replaced occasionally.

A grommet is a ring inserted into a hole through thin material, such as fabric. Grommets are generally flared or collared on each side to keep them in place, and are often made of metal, plastic, or rubber. They may be used to prevent tearing or abrasion of the pierced material, to cover sharp edges of the piercing, or both.

Grommets made of rubber or other elastic materials are also used to minimise the transmission of vibration.

Gaskets, seals, grommets and washers

A seal is a device or substance that is used to join two things together so as to prevent them coming apart or to prevent anything passing between them.

A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression.

All of our seals, gaskets and extruded profiles are cut and manufactured using computerised presses, CNC cutting machines and state of the art water jet technology.

Our Seals and Gaskets have developed a range of single sided and double sided adhesive tapes that give good adhesion to inhospitable surfaces and with this wide range of adhesive systems available, time can be saved in the assembly of our customers products.

We offer water jet cutting, this is where a high pressure jet of water is directed from a nozzle to cutting through the material. Water jets are general used to cut through softer material such as rubber and foam however abrasive material can be added to the water such as garnet and aluminium oxide to cut through stainless steel or brass without tarnishing it.

We have five state of the art CNC controlled water jet cutting machines for production needs. One of our machines is abrasive assisted allowing it to cut through plastics, aluminium, glass and marble.

Components are cut from highly lightweight foams up to solid rubbers and plastics with the aid of abrasive cutting. Dual density materials with facings and self-adhesive backings are laminated in-house to satisfy our customer’s product demands.

Acoustafoam is able to offer washers made of the following materials: metals, plastics, rubber, synthetic rubbers, foams, corks, and many more. We will manufacture washers, grommets and seals in any size and shape to customer requirements.

As our production of all our washers, seal, grommets and gaskets are done in house we are able to help with production such as the choice of material to a rapid turnaround of a prototype shipped within 24 hours.

Our fabrication department has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the manufacture of custom made components in either large volume or one of prototype. If you already have the DXF file we can have the sample turned out and shipped within 24 hours
